New York, NY (June 21, 2011) – The Funders’ Collaborative on Youth Organizing (FCYO) announced their grantee partners for the 2nd year of the ReGenerations: Leadership Pipeline Initiative, a multiyear strategy to sustain social change efforts by cultivating the leadership of low-income youth of color, systemically and intentionally, over time.  FCYO will award $425,000 in general operating support and $125,000 in technical assistance grants to 20 partners across the country.  In addition, grantee partners will be provided with capacity building, convening spaces, and evaluation support.

The Leadership Pipeline Initiative was established in 2010, following a national field scan of over 150 youth organizing groups across the country.  Through surveys, focus groups, and interviews, youth organizing practitioners informed the initiative, emphasizing the need to build a re-generating base of leaders who can address community issues and remain connected to the social justice movement. Following a rigorous selection process, the grantee partners were chosen for the Leadership Pipeline Initiative for the significant role they play as anchors in their communities.  Each grantee effectively engages young people in organizing and advocacy efforts that impact policy and social change.  They work to build a leadership pipeline for social justice by (1) engaging young people from the most marginalized communities into youth organizing; (2) supporting the holistic development of young people; and (3) facilitating young people’s transition to higher education, meaningful employment, and advanced leadership opportunities in social justice organizing.

“We are excited to be able to continue supporting youth organizing groups that are committed to developing young people and connecting them to the social justice movement.  We have seen the tremendous value that our grantees have made on influencing policy and positively impacting the young people who lead the work”, stated Supriya Pillai, FCYO’s Executive Director.

Through strategic partnerships with social justice funders such as the New World Foundation and the Merck Family Fund, FCYO has been able to expand its cohort from twelve grantee partners to twenty, including one intermediary.  In addition to general operating grants, this year FCYO will award several technical assistance grants to further support grantees.  Pillai stated, “Our ability to expand our initiative was made possible by effectively partnering grantees, intermediaries, and the philanthropic community.  We hope to continue to align our work and focus on a shared vision to further build the leadership pipeline.”
