ONE of my happiest childhood memories is of my parents at my First Communion. But that’s because most of my memories from that time are of their being absent. They weren’t there for my elementary school graduation, or for parent-teacher conferences.

From the time I was just a baby in Mexico, I lived with my grandparents while my parents traveled to other Mexican states to find work. I was 6 in 2000 when they left for the United States. And it took five years before they had steady jobs and were able to send for me. We’ve been together in this country ever since, working to build a life. Now I am 17 and a senior in high school in New York City. But my parents have left again, this time to return to Mexico.

The United Teen Equality Center (UTEC) in Lowell, MA is looking for a qualified individual to lead UTEC’s Alternative Diploma Program (ADP), a partnership with Lowell High School. For the last three years, UTEC has provided an alternative education for Lowell High students who have dropped out or are at risk of dropping out of school. Students are referred to the program by a UTEC Streetworker and /or Lowell High School as sophomores, juniors or seniors. They are taught by UTEC staff and receive a Lowell High School Diploma.

On a panel last month at the Emerging Practitioners in Philanthropy pre-Council on Foundations Conference, I presented four suggestions for social justice funders to consider. Over the next few weeks, I’ll write on each of these four and hope you’ll share your own thoughts with us.

Of the many approaches to social change, I turn most towards movement-building strategies. As a funder, then, I’m constantly searching for the ways that my practice and work best align with the demands of such an approach. Below is the first of four such ways that I’ve come to believe strongly in.

CFS is collaborating with other social justice and youth-led social change organizations to offer a four-day professional development training in October for adults who currently, or plan to, support youth activism/organizing in their organizations, schools, houses of worship, and neighborhoods.

This training program will help you to:
· Connect issue-based organizing, constituency-based organizing and other anti-oppression work to a historical context of movement-building.
· Understand the role of identity development as part of successful youth leadership development.
· Develop holistic leadership development and youth-led social change approaches that address the social-emotional needs of young people.
· Learn practical organizing and movement-building skills.
· Learn about different models of youth-led social change approaches.
· Learn popular education models and practices.

The Center for Progressive Leadership (CPL) is a national political training institute that develops diverse leaders who can effectively advance progressive political and policy change. Through long-term, comprehensive programs for organizational leaders, political professionals, activists and future candidates, CPL provides promising leaders with the skills, resources, and networks needed to become powerful progressive leaders.

With a deep commitment to developing diverse, grassroots leaders, CPL has six permanent offices (Arizona, Colorado, Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, and Washington, D.C.) and is opening 1-2 new offices each year.
